What is Plastic Soup?
Plastic Soup is all plastic waste that is ending in the oceans. More and more plastics are floating in our oceans and seas.
It comes from plastic that we throw away on the street, in rivers, parks, fishnets that are discarded, from washing synthetic clothing, brushing our teeth, etc. All these different types of plastic combined form the plastic soup in the seas. Weathering, sunlight and wave action break down large pieces into small bits. This causes serious pollution. And, because plastic is non-biodegradable, the plastic soup kills many marine animals. The plastic is degenerating into ever smaller pieces to the point that we cannot see it anymore. Microplastics are entering our food chain, the fish we eat, the water we drink, the air we inhale. Most of the plastic waste comes from land. At least 80% of the plastic rubbish in the oceans is dumped by industry and by people on land. It is carried to the sea by rivers, canals, harbour and the wind. So how we prevent plastic from ending up in the oceans is also a question we can ask ourselves. It is really a wordlwide huge problem and we have to do something about it.
Why should Rotary get involved in the struggle against plastic soup? Because Rotary is a powerful organization. With 1.2 million Rotarians, 35.000 local Rotary/Rotaract Clubs in many countries. Rotary can make the difference by creating awareness, promoting alternatives, influencing decisionmakers. Rotary did it before, connecting the world in End Polio Now. And we can all start tomorrow by using less plastic!
How we started
We started in 2018 with a number of Rotary Clubs in Amsterdamn, fishing for plastic in the Canals of Amsterdam. The first EndPlasticSoup Action Day was born and the enthusiasm of all rotarians that day gave us inspiration to continue. If we, as Rotary can make a real contribution and make an end to this enormous problem by using and connecting the international network with local actions. So we continued our activities and starte the EndPlasticSoup movement within Rotary
An important highlight this year was the presence of EndPlasticSoup at the
Rotary International Convention in Hamburg in June 2019, where we created awareness for this big problem and where 1.500 Rotarians signed the petition.
